Meet Our Board: Makini Kweli

Makini Kweli, M.P.A.,  is the Regional Field Coordinator for Detroit at Michigan Voice. Prior to working with Michigan Voice, Makini worked in the food justice movement, with a primary focus on increasing healthy, fresh, affordable food to people of color in low income neighborhoods in Detroit. Makini developed and managed financial and administrative systems for a $4.5 million USDA grant that enabled 8 community based organizations in Detroit to create innovative programs, and reach 1,000 children and family members with health services, and education to prevent obesity in children ages 2-8. Makini is currently working to bring more marginalized people/groups/organizations to the Michigan Voice in order to activate their political voice in Detroit. She enjoys traveling, trying new foods, and telling stories through photography.
