Meet Our Board: Richard Mui
I grew up in the Metro Detroit area as a second generation Chinese American, whose father worked as a cook in a Chinese restaurant. There was not an opportunity to explore my APIA identity until the university and even then, with reluctance. Once I began teaching, students approached me about starting a club for APIAs. The club, APAC, has had its ups and downs identifying its mission and purpose for existence in the early years. Over time, APAC has narrowed its focus to educating its members to APIA history and relevant current social and political issues. Personally, I have concentrated my time and efforts to enriching my own body of knowledge as well as contributing to systemic efforts to improve conditions for APIAs. To those ends, I have participated in a NEH seminar, attended APIA Vote- MI Leadership Conferences, surveyed voters and hosted, with the club, Fred Korematsu Remembrance Day at my high school.
